Nestled in the heart of Seattle’s vibrant International District, Maneki Restaurant offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that marries tradition with exceptional flavor. As one of Seattle’s beloved Japanese establishments, Maneki stands out not only for its rich culinary heritage but also for its inviting atmosphere and attentive service.
The menu at Maneki is a treasure trove for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Signature dishes such as Beef Sukiyaki and Unagi Don capture the essence of comforting, slow-simmered flavors, while the Black Cod Collar Miso offers an indulgent, buttery richness that melts effortlessly on the palate. For those who love a mix of textures, the Takoyaki presents crispy octopus balls with a tantalizing balance of savory and slightly sweet notes. Sushi enthusiasts can delight in options like the Sashimi Moriawase Premium, a fresh and artfully arranged platter of assorted sashimi, or the Variety Ozen Sushi — a beautifully composed meal tray that combines sushi, tempura, and chicken kuwayaki, delivering a harmonious bite with every forkful.
Maneki’s maki rolls are equally impressive. The Spicy Tuna Roll ignites the senses with its five-star heat and fresh, vibrant flavors from raw tuna, chili sauce, green onions, and radish sprouts. Meanwhile, the Jojo Roll captivates with warm freshwater eel glazed in a luscious homemade eel sauce. Perfectly balanced choices such as the Ume Roll —with its subtly tart pickled sour plum paste—and the Takuan Roll with crunchy pickled daikon radish show the restaurant’s commitment to traditional flavors.
Beyond the main courses, delightful appetizers and sides like the comforting Onigiri—available with salmon, ume, or okaka fillings—and delicately fried Gyoza bring the joy of Japanese small plates to your table. Sipping on authentic sake, thoughtfully paired to enhance your meal, completes this immersive experience.
The dining atmosphere at Maneki effortlessly blends historic charm with a welcoming warmth. Guests frequently praise the friendly, knowledgeable staff who elevate the dining experience with thoughtful recommendations and genuine care. From the cozy bar seating to the traditional tatami rooms, each space offers a different perspective on Japanese hospitality. One reviewer fondly recalled being seated at the bar and enchanted by the beautifully crafted interior, while another highlighted the fun and informative conversations with the host Jean, who guided guests expertly through sake selections and menu highlights.
Maneki’s efficiency is another standout feature. Whether you're securing a last-minute weekday reservation or enjoying a bustling weekend evening, the service remains attentive and prompt. Customers often note the perfect timing of dishes, ensuring every course arrives fresh and ready to be savored.
In summary, Maneki Restaurant is more than just a meal—it’s a deep dive into Japanese culinary artistry and culture. It captivates with every bite, from the silky sweetness of the black cod collars to the addictive heat of the spicy tuna roll, all set within a space that feels both historic and homey. Whether you are a long-time fan of Japanese cuisine or exploring it for the first time, Maneki’s dedication to authentic flavors, warm hospitality, and excellent value will leave a lasting impression.
I loved Maneki! The food was absolutely amazing and as far as seattle restaurants go it's a really good value for the quality and quantity of food you recive. The service was outstanding, our server answered all our questions and was super friendly and helpful, with good suggestions. The food came out with very good timing, the interior design was amazing (we also were seated at the bar which was still slightly under renovation. It was amazing since we were the only ones seated in this room.) I would definitely love to come back. Also try the black collar cod its cooked to perfection. The chefs are amazing
I tried Maneki for dinner. Service was exceptional, food was fantastic the main dining room is a little worn and tired. I'm sure if you had one of the tatami rooms and didn't mind sitting on the floor, you would give the atmosphere a 5. I had the Sakura salad (delicious) otoro nigiri or super fatty tuna belly(amazing) and the black cod collars (good but lots of bones and messy)
Maneki was hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. Jean was an incredible host—so friendly and knowledgeable. She took the time to sit with us and explain different sakes as we’ve been searching for one similar in flavor to the one we enjoyed during our visit to Beppu. Jean was also so much fun to talk with! The food was a 10/10—authentic, flavorful, and instantly took us back to our time in Japan. We loved Maneki so much that we made another reservation before flying home. We’re not locals to Seattle, but this spot will definitely be on our list every time we return. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
Foods were very delicious. Reservation process was easier than I thought. I was able to get a same day dinner reservation on a Wednesday.
Was zooming around Google Maps looking for a new place and found this amazing historic gem! Was greeted by the most adorable sweet host who found a seat for me even though it was busy and I didn't have a reservation, and was quickly waited on by an equally friendly server. Felt like I was outside of Seattle people were so friendly, which was refreshing. I had Age Dashi Tofu, Yakitori (salted) and a Chirasho Bowl and everything was just perfect. Can't wait to come back.
Ocha Zuke with salmon and Spicy Cod Karaage were superb. Miso Dengaku with tofu was so so. The description said "broiled" but it looked like steamed or boiled. The sauce on top barely had miso flavor but just lemony. Echigo rice beer was quite refreshing and smooth. I recommend it!
I always visit this restaurant each time when I visit Seattle from Calgary! Black cod was my fav! Then the broiled oysters. We also got the classic sashimi and shayu shayu (beef hot pot). Highly recommend :)
Maneki is an absolute gem in the International District and a must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic Japanese cuisine and a truly special atmosphere. Stepping inside feels like a warm hug from the past – it's one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in the country, and you can feel that history. We opted for a tatami room (highly recommend booking this in advance!), which made the experience even more memorable. Kicking off your shoes and enjoying a meal in that traditional setting is fantastic. The FOOD! Oh my goodness, the food. We had an amazing spread! The sashimi platter was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented – a real highlight. The unagi don (eel rice bowl) was rich and flavorful, and the sukiyaki was so comforting and delicious. We also tried the takoyaki (perfectly crispy and savory) and the agedashi tofu, which was delicate and flavorful. Even the chicken wings and korokke were fantastic. Everything tasted like it was made with care and tradition. Service was friendly and helpful, happy to offer recommendations. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and experience you get. This isn't some trendy, overpriced spot; it's the real deal. Maneki isn't just a meal; it's an experience. It's a piece of Seattle history that's still serving up incredible food. Can't recommend it enough! Go, but definitely make a reservation. You won't regret it.
